The Indian telecom ministry has asked the mobilephone operators to disconnect all mobile phones in the country which do not carry the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers from December 1. Though, no study has been done on the number of handsets without an IMEI number, some estimates put it as high as 25 million. The handsets with fake IMEI numbers will also have to be disconnected.

IMEI is a uniq1ue 15-digit code that comes with every mobile and helps identify the handset. By using the global positioning system (GPS), a mobile operator can track the handset user, which can track the handset user, which can help the government agencies to monitor activities of anti-national elements.

The intelligence agencies fear that the cheap Chinese handsets without an IMEI numbers could be misused by the miscreants. Therefore, they have been pressurising the telecom department to ban all phones without an IMEI number in the country. GSMA representing the interests of the world-wide mobile communication industry, is the only body which supplies the IMEI numbers to the mobile handset manufactures world-wide.

VOLVO introducing Electric Car ??

Volvo is currently developing a plug-in hybrid version of the V70. But could the company also be working a battery electric car?. There has been Internet chatter that Volvo, which has already said it will make a plug-in hybrid vehicle, will also produce an electric version of its C30. Then the other day, a source who is pretty high up in the electric car industry and who has done some work with Volvo, told me that the electric C30 was more than a rumour. The source estimated that initial volumes of the two vehicles together could total 5,000 to 10,000.

When asked about the E.V., Daniel Johnston, a spokesman for Volvo, said, " I can't talk about it. Volvo is looking at quite a few alternatives." In July, Volvo said it was working with Ener 1, an American litium-ion battery supplier, on three plug-in hybrid demonstrator cars based on the V70. Ener 1 is also battery supplier to the Fisker plug-in hybrid sports car (to be built in finland) and to the Think Globla EV company (based in Norway). The Volvo plug-in hybrids will be 'put through their paces across Europe this year as part of a rigorous development programme leading up to the planned 2012 commercial launch of a production plug-in model," Ener1 said. The company also said that the production cars will "feature some what different technology" from the demonstrators.

Rachel Carroll, a spokesperson for Ener1, said it has been working with Volvo for three years and hoped that the company would be chosed to equip the 2012 production lug-in hybrid car. A battery-only vehicle, based on the small C30 coupe, could presumably share some technology with the plug-in hybrid. Since 2007, Volvo has had a joint venture partnership with one of Scandinavia's largest utilities, Vattenfall, which is designing both home-based and public fast charging systems. Lars G. Josfsson, president and cheif executive of 'Vattenfall, said in a press statement that his company and Volvo were " developing the next-generation technology based on plug-in cars and various charging alternatives."

The charging research would also benefit a Volvo battery-only car, if indeed one were in the works.

American bike maker has begun the process of identifying its initial dealers in Hyderabad. The company expects to start selling its iconic motorcycles in India by 2010. GM SET TO DRIVE 'MINI' OVERSEAS

General Motors Mini Cars

Car maker General Motors has said it will export at least 20 percent of the planned production of 50,000 units of its mini car within the first 12 months of the launch early next year.
The company will also roll out luxury sedan Chevrolet Cruze in october with a 2.0 litre diesel engine, which would be followed by a 1.8 litre petrol one. Besides, it is planning to launch four models in India in 2010.
"We will start production of our mini car, developed on the concept of Beat, at our Talegaon plant in December and it will be launched sometime in january next year, starting with petrol variant," General Motors India president and managing director, Mr Karl Slym, said. The mini car would cost around Rs 4 lakh and the company hopes to produce over 50,000 units during 2010,he added.
"The company is targeting to export 20 percent of the mini car's total production during that period," Slym said. The company is aiming to sell 10,000 units of the mini car by end of the 2010in Sri Lanka,Bangladesh,Bhutan

TOYOTA ORDERS LARGEST RECALL

Japan,s Toyota Motor Corp announced its biggest ever recall in China,involving 6,88,314 sedans citing a defect in the electric window system.
The affected sedan models are camry,Corolla,Yaris, andVios manufactured in China by local joint venture firms with Toyata from May 2006 to the end of 2008.
The recall includes 384,736 Camry models and 22,767 Yaris models made by Guangzhou Toyota between May 15 and dec31 of 2008, the General Administration of Quality Supervision,Inspection and Quarantine said.
The recall also inculdes 35,523 Vios cars made by Tianjin FAZ-Toyota MOtot between Feb18 and Dec25 of 2008, and 245,288 Corola models made between May 17,2007 and Dec 25 of 2008.
Some owners of the Toyota cars in question reported problems when opening and closing the window on the driver' side. Toyota found that parts inside the window switches could cause part of the interior furnishing to melt,produce smoke or even catch fire. No injuries have been reported due to the defect.
It will be the largest ever auto recall in China since 2004. Toyota will start replacing the problem parts from 26th august, free of change.

Chinese battery and electric automaker BYD Co. has set up a plant to mass produce lithium batteries for its electric cars in Huizhou, south China's Guangdong Province, according to the China Securities Journal.

BYD, partly owned by Warren Buffet, has injected around five billion yuan (about US$731.5 million) into the operation of the Huizhou plant, which produces rechargeable batteries, automobile parts and handset components, Xinhua news agency reported.

Facilities for the production of batteries for the company's electric cars are almost ready now, since construction began in September last year, the newspaper said.

The Shenzhen-based company's F3DM, China's first plug-in hybrid, made its debut last December.

Huizhou plant, the first eligible for mass production of lithium-ion batteries that are core technologies of BYD's electric cars, is seen as a key step in the company's electric car manufacturing.

The Wall Street Journal said Saturday that the company is aiming to sell its all-electric battery car in the U.S. next year, ahead of the original schedule, citing company Chairman Wang Chuanfu in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, during an interview at a BYD factory there.

The application allows users to add audio notes, graphic notes and written notes to tasks. This application automatically removes tasks on the basis of their relevance in case too many are listed. Adding alarms to takes is a piece of cake. It is also possible to sort tasks on the basis of priority,due date and in alphabetical order. Users can also sync the events with the Google calendar. This app will work on a non-touchscreen QWERTY Android device as well (if it is introduced in the future).

The reason for this is the fact that the version of Android running on the HTC Magic is different from the one made by Google-as the Os is open source, HTC has made some changes to it. As of now, these changes ten to cripple the device as one has no maps to make use of its GPS facility and cannot download applications for it. While HTC insists that access to Android Market will be provide din the coming days through a software patch, Android supporters have been disappointed at the exclusion of what many feel is the 'killer app' of the OS on its India debut.
